SHILLONG, Feb 7: Congress Spokesperson and Rangsakona MLA, Zenith Sangma, on Sunday said the party high command would take a decision at an appropriate time whether or not a change in the state party leadership was required.
“Whether there is a need to change the president of Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) is an internal matter of the Congress… and in the party we have a robust mechanism based on high command,” said Sangma.
“The ball is in the court of the high command and they will take a call at an appropriate time,” he added.
It may be recalled that Congress MLAs of the state had last year written a letter to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) acting president, Sonia Gandhi, briefing her about the need to effect a change in the state party leadership.
Subsequently, the then AICC general secretary in-charge of Meghalaya, Luizinho Faleiro, chaired a zoom meeting and decided against effecting any change in the party leadership. Instead, the meeting agreed to re-energise the party with an eye on the 2023 Assembly elections. Incidentally, in September last year, the AICC removed Faleiro and appointed Manish Chatrath in his place.
Adding a new twist to the issue, the AICC Meghalaya in-charge, Chatrath, who had visited the state in January, informed that he did not receive any demand for the removal of the state Congress president, Celestine Lyngdoh.
The statement came a day after Opposition leader and former Chief Minister, Mukul Sangma, said that Lyngdoh had requested the AICC to relieve him of the post.
