Trade unions move CM, seek impartial solution

SHILLONG/ NONGPOH, Feb 12: The Meghalaya Joint Council of Trade Unions & Associations (MJCTU&A) has extended support to the protesting commercial vehicle operators while also urging Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to bring an end to the deadlock, and alleviate the sufferings of both the citizenry and the protesting cabbies, who have been equally affected by the inflation in fuel price.
In a statement on Friday, the MJCTU&A also appealed to the state government to check the “skyrocketing” price rise of essential items such as vegetables, non-essential items as well as medicines.
“Due to continuous price rise of essential commodities during pre and post-lockdown period, the common people of the sate are the worst sufferers. As such, mitigate the hardship of the common people as well as the members of Taxi Drivers & Owners  Association coupled with other commercial transporters,” the statement said, adding, “come forward with a mechanism that can give relief to all affected people of the state”.
Meet in Ri Bhoi
Meanwhile, the Joint Action Committee of All Ri Bhoi Passenger Vehicles (JACARBPV) on Friday organised a meeting during which it was decided that the commercial vehicle operators from Ri Bhoi will continue with the strike until the state government accedes to their demand.
A rally from in this regard was also held and the JACARBPV later submitted a memorandum to Ri Bhoi District Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah, asking the latter to take up the matter with the state government.
One of the leaders of the JAC of All Meghalaya Commercial Vehicles Association (JAC-AMCVA), Wondonbok Jyrwa, during the meeting, maintained that it is high time to intensify the agitation.
Jyrwa added that the state government will have to take the full responsibility for any untoward incident.
