SHILLONG, Feb 17: On receipt of complaints from residents of different localities in the city about the purported nuisance of pet dogs, the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills has advised all owners to ensure that their pets are enclosed within their residential premises, especially during night hours, a delayed report said.
All dog owners are also required to compulsorily register their pets with the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB), the DC said.
The Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), East Khasi Hills, under the Chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner on association with the District Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Officer as its Member Secretary, has undertaken sterilisation of stray dogs in January and December, in collaboration with Shillong Veterinary Hospital and NGOs like HUFAN, PAWs and Happy Tails, the DC informed.
“The exercise will be taken up from time to time in order to reduce the stray dog population in the city through humane means. A long-term plan for addressing the menace of street dogs including setting up of animal shelters and adoption centres in collaboration with the NGOs is being actively considered by the SPCA,” the DC said.
Any complaint related to stray/ dangerous dogs can be lodged with the SMB at 8787586387.
