Grand Council of Chiefs to hold emergency meeting

 SHILLONG: An emergency meeting of the Grand Council of Chiefs, of West Khasi hills will be held in Nongstoin, at 11am on Monday in the office of the Syiem of Hima Nongstoin, to discuss the political developments arising from the ruling and direction by the National Commission for Schedule Tribes, (NCST), on the issue of empowerment of traditional institutions.

The Chairman of Grand Council of Chiefs, John Kharshiing said that the issue of 25 Khasi states and their Treaty of Instrument of Accession and Annexed agreement which was accepted by the Centre on August 17, 1948 wherein all rulers agreed to accede to the Dominion of India, would be taken up during the meeting following the developments in the meetings on June 7 and June 9 in New Delhi, with V. Kishore Chandra Deo, Union Minister of Tribal Affairs and UPA Chairperson, Sonia Gandhi respectively.

The ministry informed that it is considering the suggestions after a note was sent by UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi to the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, asking them to look into the matter.

The meeting will also discuss the invitation sent to the Union Minister of Tribal Affairs, to visit Shillong and witness the Nongkrem Dance (Shad Pomblang) to be held on November 2 and 3.
