BAGHMARA: With an objective to boost the ranks of the National People’s Party by garnering the support of the rural populace of South Garo Hills keeping in mind the party’s ‘tribal-centric’ and ‘open to all’ policies, NPP president Purno A Sangma accompanied by his close confidants and party workers embarked on a whirlwind tour of South Garo Hills this week.
The former Lok Sabha Speaker accompanied by his loyal aides visited the interior villages of Siju, Rewak and Halwa Atong this week and organized interactive meetings with the villagers to familiarize them with the party’s aims and objectives.
Addressing a gathering at Siju, the veteran leader reminisced the days he worked alongside with the State’s first Chief Minister Late (Captain) Williamson A Sangma and said that it was he who had chosen him (Purno) to lead the people of the region.
He spoke at length on the objectives of the NPP stating that anyone could join politics and become an elected representative of the people through the NPP, since it is ‘tribal-centric’ and is ‘open to all’.
Slamming the present bureaucracy for alleged excessive corruption Sangma stated that the Congress-led MUA and UPA governments reeked of corruption at every level.
On allegations of playing ‘family politics’ Sangma stated that he was not playing family politics but wanted his children to join mainstream politics and emerge as capable leaders.
“I am not playing family politics but I want my children to join mainstream politics and emerge as capable leaders so that I can repay my debt to the society which has given me so much,” Sangma said.
Informing the gathering that his daughter and Union Minister of State for Rural Development Agatha K Sangma’s resignation was not being accepted by the government the veteran leader lauded the efforts of Baghmara MLA Satto R Marak in bringing much needed development to the region.
