SHILLONG: Security in and around the city and across the State has been beefed up ahead of the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations from Sunday.

East Khasi Hills SP, M Kharkrang, on Friday said extra policemen and officers will be deployed throughout the city to ensure that the Puja celebrations pass off peacefully like the previous years.

“We are even coordinating with the Central Puja Committee,” he said.

It may be mentioned that Durga Puja would be observed in 171 community puja pandals in the State including 60 in the capital city alone.

The police official also informed that meetings are being held in the respective police stations to ensure that all security precautions are in place during the festive season.

When contacted, Central Puja Committee general secretary, JL Das, said volunteers of each and every puja pandal and police personnel will provide round the clock security during the celebration.

The CPC official also informed that there will be a vigilance group committee which will keep an eye on people to ensure that no nuisance is created in any of the puja pandals.

It may be reminded that there were proposals to install CCTV cameras in some of the pandals, but nothing has materialized as yet. Many of the smaller puja pandals have expressed their objection to the same quoting financial crunch in installing the CCTV cameras.
