Anti-erosion project DPR under scrutiny: Minister

SHILLONG, March 10: Water Resources Minister, Brolding Nongsiej, on Wednesday informed the House that the Central Water Commission (CWC), Regional Office, Shillong, is still examining the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the anti-erosion project along the riverbanks of Balat, Dangar and Lalpani villages in East Khasi Hills.
Replying to a supplementary question raised by Mawsynram Congress MLA, HM Shangpliang, during the Question Hour, Nongsiej assured that the state government will follow up with the CWC on the DPR with an estimate (Contd on P-4)

(Contd from P-3) of Rs 105.126 crore, which the department had submitted to the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
Informing that his department has initiated works for the protection of Umngi river, Nongsiej said that they have taken up emergency measures by using palisaded bamboo filled with sand bags to prevent bank erosion at Balat village and market area, which were sanctioned through state plan.
Earlier, Shangpliang had stated that the bank erosion along the Umngi river has rendered plantation and houses damaged. He also informed that a temple and church were earlier washed away by the river.
