SHILLONG, March 10: The Opposition MLAs, on Wednesday, stood up en masse to demand for new civil sub-divisions in their respective constituencies.
The MLAs clamoured for the demand after Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma replied to the debate on the Governor’s address highlighting that there were demands for creation of new districts, civil sub-divisions and blocks.
The Opposition MLAs who made an appeal to the chief minister for forming new civil sub-divisions include Mawlai MLA PT Sawkmie, Mawsynram MLA HM Shangpliang and Umroi MLA George B Lyngdoh.
PT Sawkmie suggested that the government may consider setting up new civil sub-division in Mawlai as it is one of the largest constituencies in the state.
Earlier, chief minister had stated that many people have called on him to talk about creation of new blocks, sub-divisions and districts. “Even Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh has flagged his concerns about areas in West Khasi Hills and demanded for a district in Mairang. We are a committed administration closer to the people and the demands are definitely there in our agenda,” he said. (Contd on P-4)

(Contd from P-3) He said that a detailed analysis is being done in an aggressive manner to figure out how we could take the administration closer to the citizenry, and whether or not there is a need to strengthen the administrative setup. “We will try to find a way forward with regard to taking governance closer to the people, of course keeping in mind the financial constraints,” the chief minister added.
