SHILLONG: The court of the District Session Judge on Friday has upheld the plea for framing of charges against GNLA chairman Champion R Sangma, clearing the way for his trial from next month.

District and Session judge B Giri issued the order after rejecting a plea for dropping the charges against the GNLA chief.

The court rejected the plea to drop the charges against Champion after hearing the arguments of both the prosecution and the defense.

“The court upheld that prima facie charges against the accused was found,” Public Prosecutor IC Jha informed while speaking to reporters after the hearing.

He also informed that the court has decided to frame charges against Champion under Section 121 (A) (attempting to wage war against the Government of India) of the IPC and Section 16, 18 and 38 (1) (2) of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, 1967.

“The court would start the process of framing of charges from November,” Jha said.

Champion was produced before the court on Friday in connection with a hearing on a case registered at Pynursla police station on the day of his arrest. This is one of the ten cases that have been framed against the rebel chief.

The GNLA chairman was arrested by the State police on July 30 from the Umkrem-Pyrdiwah area in East Khasi Hills on the Indo-Bangla border.
