TURA, March 24: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has announced that the Centre has accorded sanction of Rs 700 crore for district councils in the state, out of which the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) would be getting around RS 250 crore.
The chief minister revealed this latest financial development while campaigning for his party, the NPP in East Garo Hills on Wednesday.
Speaking at an election rally in Darugre GHADC constituency in Rongjeng on Wednesday, Conrad said that the upcoming funding would be for creating development assets for the Garo Hills.
The chief minister did not mince his words as he took on the Congress, blaming it for all the ills affecting the district council.
“The Congress has lost its political ground across India and they have no political will anymore. They have no option in the party even for party  president post, ether in state or central level,” lashed out the chief minister as he sought votes for his party.
Continuing his tirade against the previous Congress regime in the GHADC, the chief minister reiterated his claims of illegal appointments made by past opposition executive committees.
“From 1700 employees, the figure rose to 2,300 because of ghost employees, in whose names, monthly salaries were being drawn despite no details or bank accounts. After our NPP-led EC began streamlining the GHADC, we put a stop to this. We need to find out who benefitted from this misappropriation. This has to be found out,” said Conrad Sangma at Darugre field during campaigning.
A host of NPP leaders including legislators Timothy D Shira of Resubelpara, Marcuise Marak of Williamnagar and Jim Sangma of Rongjeng also addressed the public as they sought support for their candidate.
