NONGSTOIN, March 31: In a bid to help tackle the looming threat of drug menace in the area, the Theo Integrated Rehabilitation Centre was inaugurated at Langumshing village in Mawshynrut Civil Sub-Division, West Khasi Hills, on Wednesday.
Founded and funded by Lovingwell Social Organization, the centre was inaugurated by the family of (L) Lovingwell Sangriang.
Speaking during the inaugural programme, Daplin Wahlang, director of the centre, who is also the daughter of Lovingwell Sangriang, informed that the facility has one doctor and director each besides three counsellors and other employees.
She further informed that the centre was built farther from Nongstoin town in order to enable the patients breathe fresher air and also to avoid public nuisance.
Informing about the operations of the rehab, Wahlang said that out of the two drug addicts undergoing rehabilitation at the facility, one has been declared cured while another is still under treatment.
Albeit faced with hurdles, the director expressed joy in inaugurating the rehab so as to help the youths.
Stating this, she even urged the state government to lend them a helping hand as most addicted youths come from a poor background.
She expressed hope that the government would support them with financial assistance to run the rehabilitation centre, following which they will be able to admit patients free of cost.
Speaking on the occasion, Mawshynrut MLA Gigur Myrthong stressed on the need for better cooperation from village headmen to eradicate anti-social elements arising out of drug abuse cases.
He also promised to contribute Rs 3 lakh to the rehab from his MLA scheme.
