SHILLONG, April 1: The Shillong Manipuri Students’ Union has decried the inability on the part of concerned authorities at the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) to reopen it doors for students and conduct offline classes despite repeated requests.
In a statement on Thursday, the students’ union also accused Vice Chancellor SK Srivastava of being absent since 2020 winter vacation till date. “Thereafter, the deputy registrar and concerned authorities/administrators have not given any indication to reopen the University to avail offline classes, in spite of repeated requests from the students and professors of the University,” the statement said.  The students’ union also alleged that the University administrators encourage the students and professors to continue with online classes.
“Due to COVID-19 pandemic, all the institutes had suspended offline classes and were forced to opt for online classes. The online classes were not effective for many students owing to poor mobile network and improper system of the institutes. Now, with normalcy returning, schools, colleges and universities in the North East have started reopening and offering offline classes with proper SOPs in place,” the students’ union said.
It has also sought the intervention of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma while appealing to the administrators to reopen the University for offline classes.
