NONGSTOIN: After a second attempt by activist Pynskhemlang Nongshlong to sit on a hunger strike in the capital city ended in failure on Friday, a fresh hunger strike was launched at Langpih on Saturday by Jimwell Thongni of Iew Nongma (Langpih).

Thongni told media at Langpih that he has decided to sit on a fast-unto-death to extend his support to Pynskhem who was apprehended by the Police at Shillong on Friday.

“If Pynskhemlang Nongshlong is continuing his fast at the Shillong Sadar Police Station, it is my duty to continue the fast at Langpih,” Thongni said, adding, “I will continue my fast-unto-death until and unless they release Pynskhemlang Nongshlong.”

Meanwhile, NGOs like the Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM), FKJGP (Langpih Circle) and CSWO (Langpih) organised an emergency meeting at Nongstoin on Monday and resolved to launch their hunger strike on November 2 at 11am at Langpih to protest against the arrest of Pynskhemlang Nongshlong on October 27.

The meeting also resolved to demand the State Government to negotiate with the Assam Government for releasing of Ephrem Nongsiej, who is lodged in a central jail in Assam after being wrongly framed by Assam Police on charges that he was carrying gun and ammunition at Langpih.

The NGOs have also urged the residents of Block I and II to support and join in the proposed hunger strike in their respective places.
