SHILLONG, April 27: Three days after a delegation comprising 17 members from Assam Police and officials from Forest department allegedly entered Umbah village in West Khasi Hills and destroyed houses of locals, the state police has deployed additional force along the interstate border to avert any untoward situation while talks are also on to iron out the issue.
“Additional police personnel have been posted there and the situation is normal,” informed a senior police official.
It was also informed that the police from the neighbouring state had reportedly destroyed the resting place/huts constructed at the disputed site by the villagers to oversee the cultivation.
“We are constantly engaged in talks with our counterparts to see that everything is under control and no such thing reoccurs,” the official informed.
On Saturday morning, a delegation of 17 members from Assam Police along with officials from Forest department had allegedly entered Umbah village near Kyrshai in West Khasi Hills and destroyed houses of villagers residing along Meghalaya-Assam border and damaged vegetables fields.
Even Home Minister, Lahkmen Rymbui, had refused to comment anything on the matter.
It has been alleged that the prime intention behind the act was to arrest the headman and the secretary of Umbah village.
The incident had apparently triggered apprehensions among the locals, who went on to hide inside a forest.
