SHILLONG, April 29: The Meghalaya Government has recruited and appointed 1,320 lower-primary and 99 upper-primary schoolteachers in April. Informing this, Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma, said that all the teachers have been qualified as per National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) regulations and have cleared Meghalaya Teachers’ Eligibility Test (MTET).
Taking to Twitter on Thursday, Conrad said, “There shall be no more single-teacher schools as the rationalisation process has been completed in placement of teachers. I congratulate all the newly appointed teachers and wish them well in their pursuit for a better educational environment for our students”.
Earlier, Education Minister, Lahkmen Rymbui, had conceded that there is a need to appoint permanent teachers as there are vacancies in government lower-primary schools where teachers are appointed on contractual basis.
According to Rymbui, during the process of rationalisation, the state government decided to transfer the teachers from schools having superfluity of educators to those schools that are in need.
Asserting that the state is working on the three pillars — trained teachers, improving infrastructure and updating syllabus — to improve the education system, the education minister had also asked the village authorities ensure that appointed teachers attend classes.
“If they don’t attend classes, they should report the matter to the authorities for action,” Rymbui said.
