SHILLONG, May 6: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded alarm over another spell of rainfall in Meghalaya, which it terms as “enhanced pre-monsoon rainfall spell”, which will persist for a period 4-5 days starting May 6.
“…fairly widespread to widespread rainfall/thunderstorm activity is very likely over Northeastern states including Meghalaya,” the IMD said in a statement.
The projection is based on the influence of “an east-west trough which runs from eastern parts of central India to North-east India across east India in lower levels. This east-west trough is very likely to persist during next 4-5 days”, it added.
In its forecast for Meghalaya, the IMD said, “Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) is very likely (over Meghalaya) during next 4-5 days. Heavy rainfall at isolated places during May 6-8 and isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall during May 9-10 is very likely.”
Only recently, the IMD had announced a spell of rainfall for the past five days. Light to moderate rain was observed in all districts while East Garo Hills and East Khasi Hills districts have recorded isolated heavy rainfall on one or two days, it said.
