70 injured as blast derails Ghy-Puri Express

Guwahati: At least 70, persons were injured, several of them seriously, when a powerful explosion derailed four coaches and capsized four others of Guwahati-Puri Express at Bhatkuchi between Rangiya and Goghrapar railway stations of Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR) at around 8:20 on Sunday night.

NFR chief spokesman SS Hajong said sabotage was suspected behind the train mishap even as police started investigation at the accident site.

Passengers travelling in the ill-fated train claimed to have heard a big bang just before the four coaches just behind the engine were thrown out of the track. The explosion occurred just behind the engine of the train that left the track damaged.

The train was travelling from Guwahati to Puri and left Guwahati station at 7-15 pm.

A medical team was rushed from Guwahati in a relief train to give first aid to injured at the accident site which is a remote area.

The seriously injured passengers were being evacuated to hospitals at Guwahati and Rangiya.
