SHILLONG: The ‘defected’ NCP legislators on Monday sought two more months’ time to reply to the complaint lodged by NCP legislator and Deputy Speaker Sanbor Shulllai.

The NCP had lodged a complaint with the Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Charles Pyngrope seeking disqualification of 11 legislators who had joined the newly-formed National People’s Party (NPP).

The tactic of the defected legislators is that within two months, the Assembly elections may be announced and by then the complaint would not have any value.

The Assembly Secretariat had sent individual letters to all the eleven defected legislators on November 7, giving them a week’s time to reply.

It was on August 24 that the NCP legislators except Shullai and Adolf Hitelr Marak joined the newly formed NPP.

Four legislators — Omillo Sangma, Nihim Shira , Marcuise Marak and Phillipole Marak — on Monday sent letters to the Assembly Speaker seeking more time to reply, an official of the Assembly Secretariat said.

One of the reasons cited by the MLAs is that many legislators were out of station. They also expressed the need to have a joint meeting of all the legislators before finally replying to the Speaker.

Moreover, the members also wanted more time to consult legal experts.

Earlier, the NPP leader PA Sangma said that there was no ground for disqualifying the defected legislators.
