SHILLONG: The breakaway faction of Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC-B) has asserted that the outfit is still open for talks if the State Government is serious about peace and stability in the state.

The outfit’s assertion assumes significance in view of reports that the talks process has derailed after the outfit unleashed reign of terror in Garo Hills recently.

In a statement issued here on Wednesday, the militant outfit said, “The ANVC-B is not a violent organization and the State Government is to be blamed for what is presently happening in Garo Hills.”

Earlier, talks were on with the ANVC at the level of Principal Secretary (Home) to examine the demands of the militant outfit. However, with the reports of incidents of illegal activities, the superintends of police of all the districts of Garo Hills have been asked to provide ground assessment report on the activities of ANVC(B) before carrying forward talks process.

According to the ANVC-B, the leaders of the outfit responded to the State Government’s call for truce immediately and waited for invitation for talks.

It is learnt that an official level committee was formed to pursue the talks with the ANVC (B) and the committee is waiting for the reports from the SPs of all the districts of Garo Hills before starting the next round of talks.
