SHILLONG: HSPDP supremo Hoping Stone Lyngdoh has said that there is a need for a strong people’s movement to abolish the sub-state status given to Meghalaya.
While emphasizing on the need to retain the Khasi State Federation status which has already been agreed in principle by Indian Union in 1947, Lyngdoh said the people should unitedly demand for removing the sub-state status under Assam.
According to Lyngdoh, the fact is that sub-state rules are still being applied to the State since the initial creation of Meghalaya in 1969.
“With Meghalaya is yet to achieve a full-fledged state status, several important administrative services like Forest, Police, Secretariat, and Judiciary are still with Assam,” HSPDP supremo told reporters here on Wednesday.
He said despite holding several high-level meeting on this critical issue, no one has taken any initiative to move the Centre for removal of this sub-State status.
He informed that he in the past had met the President of India and discussed on the need to create a separate Khasi State.
Meanwhile, in a letter to Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma, Lyngdoh referred to Nagaland and Mizoram, which have achieved full-fledged state status.
