Kokrajhar situation remains tense

Guwahati: Indefinite curfew remained enforced for the second day in violence-affected Kokrajhar district in Bodoland Territorial Autonomous District Council (BTC) in Assam where situation was stated to be under control but tense.

Director General of Assam Police, Jayanta Narayan Choudhury was in Kokrajhar on Friday to take stock of the situation and review the measures taken by the police and paramilitary forces in coordination with the Army.

The DGP who chaired a close door law and order review meeting with the SP, Deputy Commissioner of the district, IGP of State Police, senior officials of the CRPF, BSF, SSB and the Army in Kokrajhar, termed the fresh incidents of killing in the BTC area since November 10 as isolated incidents.

Meanwhile, security forces have arrested total 21 persons in connection with the two incidents murder in Kokrajhar district yesterday. Fifty other persons have been arrested for violating curfew including an Ex-MLA Hemendra Nath Brahma.

The DGP further informed that the operation had been intensified to seize illegal weapons available in the BTC area in view of fresh incidents of shoot-outs.

He said that there were two types of illegal weapons available in the BTC area – sophisticated weapons and country-made weapons. The DGP said there was information about availability of about 100 odd sophisticated illegal weapons in the BTC area while number of illegal country-made weapons could not be ascertained.

He also informed that the administration in the BTC was exploring ways to keep a tab on licensed weapons available in the area.
