Agartala: The Tripura police has been functioning under the direction of the ruling CPI-M, alleged senior Pradesh Congress leader Tapas De here on Saturday.

De said two recent incidents involving CPI-M MLA Shankar Prasad Datta and Tapan Das had proven that police was not functioning as per norms and legal procedure rather the institution had become a political front of the ruling party and was trying hard to protect the criminals.

“Tapan Das, MLA from Nalchar in West Tripura is suspected of using the revolver of his personal guard on his sister in-law three days ago and the matter was not reported to police either by the MLA or by doctors in the local hospital where the victim was taken to. Police was yet to interrogate him and trying to maneuver the incident,” Mr De maintained.

The victim Arati Das (65) was critically injured when a bullet from the service revolver of her son-in-law Shyamal Das who is also the personal guard of the MLA, hit her at Nalchar on November 14. She was taken to a local hospital where doctors referred her to Agartala Government Medical College without reporting the incident to police.

However, MLA Mr Das who was the prime accused in the case of opening fire on Arati had shifted her to a private hospital in Agartala that is run by a group of CPI-M leaders and still the statement of the victim was not recorded, Mr De further added.

On the other hand, MLA Shankar Prasad Datta on November 12 allegedly took away two prime accused of anti-social activities in Agartala Government Medical College area forcefully from east Agartala police station.

He also abused the officer in-charge of the police station but police did not take any action against Mr Datta yet, the Congress leader went on to say.

He said a six-member Congress delegation yesterday met IG (Law and Order) Rajiv Singh, seeking legal action against MLA Datta and Das in the next 72 hours.

The CPI-M was trying to cover up the incident involving Mr Das, terming it an accident while the party said Mr Datta’s behaviour with the police station in-charge was unbecoming and uncalled for, Mr De said, adding his party would go for mass movement against such irregularities in police force.

He further informed that Tripura Pradesh Congress has called an emergent meeting on Sunday. (PTI)
