Fishing trip costs man his life
SHILLONG, May 25: A 43-year-old man drowned in Mawphlang dam on Monday morning while he was out on a fishing trip. According to police, the deceased has been identified as Morning Dohtdong of Mawphlang Mawkohmon. Police informed that Mawngap Police Station received information about the case from the Rangbah Shnong of Mawphlang Mawkohmon. They also informed that Dohtdong had gone on a fishing trip along with his son and brother. Accordingly, the police personnel of Mawngap PS and Fire and Emergency Services rushed to the Mawphlang dam. Some of the eyewitnesses told police that Dohtdong dived into the water carrying fishing net to catch fish. He then began struggling while trying to swim, they added. Fishermen attempted to save Dohtdong, police said, while adding that they had even raised a cry for help from some of the labourers who were working at the dam, but all in vain. However, it was only after the damage was done the personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services and Special Response Team fished out the body from the water.

EFLU inaugurates nodal centre
SHILLONG, May 25: The English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), Shillong campus, inaugurated the Centre for English and Foreign Languages Training (CEFLT) on Monday. The nodal centre will conduct certificate courses of proficiency in English and foreign languages and develop language and communication skills in the North East. K Moses Chalai, secretary, North Eastern Council (NEC), virtually inaugurated the centre in presence of Prof TK Bamon, director, EFLU Shillong. CEFLT is a Government of India initiative for capacity building in English and other foreign languages in the Northeastern region and for the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) member countries. The centre aims to enhance the employability skills of the youth in the North East.
