False promises to cancer patient

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG: A week after Independent candidate from Jirang constituency, Lamboklang Mylliemngap, was accused of first making false promises and later ‘deserting’ a 65-year-old cancer patient, Kephas Thangkhiew, undergoing treatment at KJP Hospital in Shillong, the supporters of Mylliemngap on Monday denied the allegations surmising the report as ‘false and baseless’.

“The allegation made against the Independent candidate is with intention to malign and tarnish the image of the candidate,” Mylliemngap’s supporter S Thangkhiew said.

Clarifying the matter before the press here on Monday, Thangkhiew said that it is wrong to allege that Mylliemngap along with his two supporters, Khonglam and Mor Lyngdoh, had deserted the patient after promising to foot his medical bills.

“Kephas was never left unattended; instead every care was taken for his treatment. We have enough proof that could substantiate our claims in the form of paid bills from KJP Hospital,” Thangkhiew said.

He also stated that the total expenditure borne by the Independent candidate on behalf of Kephas during his two-month stay in Shillong Civil Hospital and KJP Hospital, amounted to Rs 43,000 excluding the money spent on conducting tests, blood transfusion, food and the likes.

Thangkhiew also claimed that Kephas himself insisted on being discharged from the hospital and it was only after continuous persuasion that Dr A Mawlong

of Shillong Civil Hospital allowed him to go home with the instruction that he must be brought back after ten days for routine check-up but after the tenth day, the old man was hesitant to come to Shillong.

Kephas’ nephew, Glomen Thangkhiew, also confirmed the claims by the candidates’ supporters saying, “I was there all the time with my uncle and I know how much help we have received. But it was my uncle who kept insisting that he be taken back home.”

At the same time, a press note was issued which stated that Kephas Thangkhiew has categorically denied having given any interviews to any reporter.

“So it can only be surmised that the report is false and baseless. We know for a fact that four persons had paid him a visit and took some pictures, but they never asked any questions nor told him their purpose of visit,” the note added.

The supporter further stated that in a DVD of an interview videotaped a day after the reports came out in the local media Kephas Thangkhiew had said that he was never informed of anything but only that he was promised help.
