SHILLONG: The National Security Advisory Board (NSAB) chairman Naresh Chandra has said it is up to the Centre to take a decision on the issue of repeal or amendment of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).
Speaking to reporters after the meeting of the Board with the civil society members, academics and individuals here on Tuesday, Chandra said that majority of the civil society members were in favour of either repeal or amendment of AFSPA as they felt that it was ‘counter-productive’.
During the discussion there was near unanimity from all seven states that AFSPA is a repressive law that has no place in a democracy.
When asked about the stand of the Board in this regard, the Chairman said “only the Centre can take a final call on the issue as we, as an advisory body, can only communicate the views of the people to the Centre”.
