SHILLONG: The Lower Primary school teachers under the banner of All Meghalaya Adhoc Lower Primary School Association (AMALPSA) on Thursday held a sit-in demonstration to press for an increase in their salary.

Later, a delegation of teachers also met the Chief Secretary WMS Pariat over their grievances who asked the teachers to provide time till December 7 to study their demands.

It may be mentioned that 1116 adhoc teachers are working in primary schools of the state and they are getting a salary of mere Rs 3000 which does not help in meeting their requirements.

The teachers’ organisation had petitioned the state education Minister R C Laloo last July demanding increase in their monthly salary.

“The pay is a clear violation of Article 14 of the constitution which states the principle of ‘Equal pay for Equal Work’,” AMALPSA president B Marbaniang said.
