SHILLONG: Taking a strong cognizance on the overloading trend followed by the local taxis, the Shillong Traffic police on Saturday seized as many as sixteen local taxis for loading beyond the sitting capacity.

It is an open fact that Shillong is the place for over loading as be it the Government run buses, maxi taxis or local taxis tend to indulge in over loading without any fear of the law enforcing authorities.

The sixteen local taxis were detained by Sadar Traffic Branch and all the over loading taxis were bound for Rilbong.

The over loading by drivers has been a frequent issue raised among people as it also makes it very difficult for female passengers to sit in a cramped up taxi especially when all the passengers in it are all male.

The police also realized a fine of Rs 5500 from the sixteen local taxis which were detained for over loading.

Sources said that similar checking would be conducted in different pockets of the city and any driver indulging in over loading will be strictly dealt with.

It is evident that in Shillong the local taxis put in four passengers in the back seat and most of them are women.

While the many passengers complain about the present seating capacity, these complains have seem to fallen on deaf ears.
