SHILLONG: The State Cabinet on Wednesday approved an amendment in the Meghalaya Excise Rules to promote investment in breweries as has been done for promoting bottling of whisky and other spirits.

Speaking to media persons after a Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma said, “Now the breweries would be given a concession of 15 per cent as was being done for all the bottling plants in the State.”

“This is done to encourage them and to enable them to withstand the onslaught of market,” Dr Sangma said.

According to Dr Sangma, with the necessary amendment, the Government has also decided to revise the export fee from Rs 100 to Rs 2 per case of beer bottled and manufactured in the State.

“We will keep on reviewing it,” he said.

Presently, one brewery is being established in the State.

In addition, the Cabinet also decided to revise the import fee of beers from existing Rs 54 to Rs 86, the Chief Minister informed, adding that this would enable the State Government to earn extra revenue to the tune of Rs 5 crore.
