SHILLONG: The wait becomes longer for the farmers, who have been demanding compensation for the losses suffered by them due to construction of the Shillong bypass, as the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has found some loopholes in the assessment report submitted by the State government.
The government had submitted a new assessment report to the NHAI in October and it was expected the same would get the authority’s approval before November 15. A state government official on Wednesday said that the NHAI in a letter made some observations on the assessment report and sought clarification. The farmers have been demanding the government to pay compensation for the loss they suffered due to dumping of soil in the paddy fields by GR Infra Company while constructing the much-delayed Shillong Bypass.
“We will invite them (NHAI) for a meeting probably next week to clarify on those points so that the compensation is paid at the earliest,” the official said. The compensation is to be paid by the concerned company which is implementing the project. On the other hand, the KSU has fixed November 30 as deadline for the Government to pay the compensation failing which the Union has threatened to agitate.
