Govt hikes ad hoc teachers’ pay

SHILLONG: Under pressure from thousands of school teachers, the State government has approved enhancement of salary of both ad hoc lower primary and upper primary school teachers.

The new pay scale will be effective from December 1, 2012.

Briefing newsmen after a Cabinet meeting here on Wednesday, Education Minister Prof RC Laloo said the salary of ad hoc lower primary school teachers is increased to Rs 6,000 from the current Rs 3,000 and for the ad hoc upper primary schools teachers the pay is raised to Rs 8,000 from current Rs 6,000. For head teachers, the pay has been raised from Rs 7000 to Rs 9000.

“For 1225 ad hoc lower primary schools, the grant has been raised to Rs 12,000 from Rs 6000 per month for two teachers and for 844 upper primary schools, the grant has been increased to Rs 33,000 from Rs 25,000 per month for three teachers including the head teachers irrespective of their qualifications,” Prof Laloo said.

“A total amount of Rs 1,764 lakh will be required to meet the additional expenditure,” he said. The state government had revised the salary for the lower primary on April 1, 2007 while for the upper primary school the revision was done on April 1, 2010.

It may be mentioned that the government has revised the pay following demands from various teachers’ body including the All Meghalaya Adhoc Lower Primary School Association (AMALPSA) and All Meghalaya Primary School Teachers Association (AMPSTA) besides others.
