SHILLONG: Several parts of city on Thursday witnessed yet another traffic snarl as most of the roads were clogged with vehicles leading to chaos throughout the day.
With the start of coal export season recently, hundreds of trucks carrying coal have also choked the city roads.
When asked the reason for the traffic snarl, the East Khasi Hills SP M. Kharkrang said that the police usually release trucks from 11 am to 1 pm daily and two accidents in Malki and Madanryting in the meantime also added to the problem.
During the day, many coal-laden trucks were stranded in different parts of the city.
Normally, the trucks are prohibited from entering the city from 7 am till 7 pm. However, trucks are allowed to ply through the city at certain intervals, especially between 11 am and 1 pm, to ease the highway congestion.
Another reason for the traffic snarl is change in school timings due to ongoing annual examinations. “All these things led to the jam,” the SP said.
Despite creating awareness, hundreds of smaller vehicles continued to overtake on Thursday which further worsened the situation.
The STP is also making use of the Meghalaya Integrated Information (MII) system in order to make people aware about traffic rules through the LEDs displays and other means.
The STP currently has a strength of around 220 constables and it is expected to receive a major boost with the state government planning to create more posts.
