SHILLONG: Ending all speculation, the State government has finally appointed the State’s senior most police official Kulbir Krishan as the new DGP.

Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma on Thursday night cleared the file to pave way for Kulbir Krishan’s appointment.

Krishan, who is currently holding the post of DG (prisons) ,will assume charge on December 1 since the present acting DGP, Rajiv Mehta is set to take over as the new DG, Narcotics Control Bureau in Delhi from December, sources said .

For nearly a month, the State Government has not been able to appoint a fullfledged DGP since the retirement of N. Ramachandran on October 31.

It was on October 18 that the State Security Commission had shortlisted five names, Krishan (1976 batch), Director General of Home Guards from Assam, Subhash Goswami and Meghalaya Director General of Civil Defence and Home Guards, Prem Singh,( both 1977 batch), B. Kezo, DG (prisons),Nagaland (1978 batch) and, DK Pathak ADG training, CRPF posted in Delhi.

After the State Government selected Kezo as the next DGP, Nagaland Government did not release him with an intention to make him as the next DGP there. Later, the Government was left with only four names.

After the State Government did not get any favourable response from the police officials, Goswami and Pathak who are serving outside the State, the State Home department has zeroed in on Krishan and Prem Singh.

Singh has expressed his inability to accept the post of DGP as he will go on deputation to the Centre.
