New studio to focus on preserving old songs

SHILLONG: Deputy Chief Minister and in charge of Arts and Culture Bindo M Lanong on Tuesday said that the department is taking a step for preserving old songs and accordingly a studio will be set up for the purpose.

The Minister made the statement during a two day seminar on prominent composers of the region in the city on Tuesday organized by the Indian Council for Cultural Research in association with la-Riti Foundation.

“The studio will benefit scholars and tourists who want to learn something about the region,” he said.

While asserting that the introduction of music departments in colleges and universities have helped local musicians to take the traditional music to new level, he even hoped that the proposed music academy at Mawdiandiang will be of great help for young talents of the state.

The Regional Officer of ICCR, MS Singh while speaking on the occasion also said that music portrays the real identity and shows the rich cultural heritage of a particular community.

He also opined that translation of all the compositions and songs of yesteryears can be attempted so that the world can get acquainted with this part of the region through music.

In recognition to the contribution made in the field of music, six composers of the state- (L)Amiyo Lyngskor, (L)Cyril Lyngdoh, (L) Fredie Cholas Kharshiing, Quotient Sumer, EW Kharsohnoh and Silbi Passah were also felicitated.

A National Awardee from the Sangeet Natak Academy K Khongjirem was also felicitated on the occasion.
