SHILLONG, July 11: The Executive Committee of Sohra District Demand Forum has resolved to move Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to remind him through a petition about their demand to upgrade Sohra Civil Subdivision into a district.
In a statement on Sunday, the general secretary of the forum, Roy Kumar Synrem, said that the headquarter of the new district should be established at Sohra since it is centrally located and the people residing along the villages under the civil subdivision can easily communicate if they wished to arrive for any official work.
Claiming that the necessary infrastructures are already in place, the forum maintained that Sohra deserves to be upgraded into a district.
Reacting to the chief minister’s recent remark, the forum general secretary said that the forum is disappointed with the reasons cited by the chief minister that it is geographically not conducive to create a new district in Sohra.
“We have been very clear since 2018 that the new district will cover areas under Sohra Civil Subdivision. We had never mentioned that the areas outside the subdivision will form part of this new district. Therefore, we will not accept that the government will not grant us the district on the ground of geographical problem,” Synrem said.
The forum also thanked the villagers, traditional heads, Khlieh Nongsynshar, pressure groups and public representatives of the area for joining hands in the demand for a new district.
