SHILLONG: There is a demand to accord constitutional recognition to Khasi language by way of inclusion in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution which has been pending since 2003.

Pynskhem Syiemlieh, information and public relation secretary of the Meghalaya People’s Human Rights Council (MPHRC) in a statement issued here on Tuesday, said that though the initiative in this regard was taken by the State Government by declaring Khasi as an associate language in the State, the Constitution is yet to accord full recognition to Khasi language.

The Khasi language has already been recognized as one of the world languages by the United Nations, Syiemlieh added.
