SHILLONG: A good news for students pursuing MBBS course in the North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Medical Science (NEIGRIHMS).

A team of Medical Council of India (MCI) will visit the institute tentatively in January next year to take the final call on granting official recognition to graduate and post-graduate courses of the institution.

Informing this here on Wednesday, Dr AG Ahangar, Director, NEIGRIHMS, said the decision to this effect was taken during his recent meeting with the MCI officials in New Delhi

The MCI team will assess the examination of the MBBS graduate and post-graduate courses before taking any decision on granting recognition,” Dr Ahangar said.

The theory examination is scheduled for January to be followed by practical.

The MBBS course (50 seats) has so far not got the Medical Council of India’s (MCI) recognition and the first batch is slated to pass out in 2013.

“If everything goes well there should not be any problem in getting MCI approval to graduate and post-graduate courses,” he said. It may be mentioned that recently the Supreme Court in its ruling had said that the Medical Council of India (MCI) can only give “recommendatory” recognition to institutions but has no power to grant one. Such powers lie with the Government of India.
