SHILLLONG: The NCP leadership has directed the party’s state unit to keep a watch on the activities of Agatha Sangma and send a report to the high command if she campaigns for the newly-formed NPP during the upcoming Assembly elections.

Informing this here on Saturday, the NCP’s state unit president Sanbor Shullai said the directive was given during a recent meeting between a delegation of the State unit and the NCP’s central leadership held at New Delhi.

It may be mentioned that former Lok Sabha Speaker PA Sangma, the architect of NPP in Meghalaya, and Opposition leader in the State Assembly Conrad Sangma had made it public that the NCP MP from Tura would campaign for NPP during the upcoming Assembly elections. The NPP even dared NCP to suspend Agatha for campaigning for the former.

Talking to media persons after inaugurating an outdoor stadium at Madan Laban in city, Shullai said the meeting also discussed the strategies to be adopted for the Assembly elections due in 2013.

The delegation met the party general secretary Praful Patel. “We discussed how to strengthen the party for the elections,” he said adding that the party has no plan to go for any pre-poll alliance.

The party so far has announced candidates for seven constituencies. The NCP leader informed that the names of the other candidates will be announced shortly. “The party is planning to field 25 to 30 candidates, which includes ten or fifteen seats in Garo Hills,” he added.

According to Shullai, the state unit even requested the party chief Sharad Pawar to visit the state to review the party’s preparedness for the polls as well as to address a few election rallies. When asked about his own constituency (South Shillong), the sitting MLA from Laban claimed that he would win the seat by a huge margin.
