One more gang rape accused arrested

TURA/Shillong: East Garo Hills police have arrested another member of the gang involved in the brutal gangrape of a young girl at Williamnagar, bringing the total arrested to fourteen.

The teenage girl was gangraped while she was returning with two other friends from the Simsang winter festival on Thursday night near Sacred Heart School.

Police on Monday arrested Rikrak M Sangma, son of Witin N Marak of Asiragre, Williamnagar, bringing the total number of arrests to fourteen.

Earlier, 13 others were picked up and they are identified as Jefri N Marak, Kesen N Marak, Platon C Marak, Chengcho T Sangma, Roning M Sangma, Eddie C Marak, Tairus M Sangma, Hostan Momin, Holris Momin, Jebius B Marak, Cherak M Sangma, Loston Ch Marak and Patrick Sangma.

Two other culprits, Apgap Sangma of Warima of Williamnagar and Cheong Marak of Jakopgre village, 7 kms from Williamnagar across the river, continue to remain absconders and police teams are on a massive search for them.

Out of the 14 arrests made so far, 8 of the culprits are juveniles in the ages of 14-15 and are being remanded to a juvenile home by a district court.

The arrested persons have reportedly confessed to the crime.

While two of the girls managed to escape the third tripped and fell while trying to escape and was caught up by the gang members.

The gang committed the crime in an isolated area not far from the Sacred Heart School.

According to police, the condition of the victim is not that serious as she was discharged from the hospital on the night of the incident.

“The girl however was again admitted to the hospital on the following day,” police informed.
