TURA, Aug 7: Widespread illegal mining of sand and boulders from forests and public lands in villages across the civil sub-division of Dadenggre in West Garo Hills has compelled authorities to impose Section 144 CrPC, prohibiting illegal mining and quarrying within the civil sub-division.
A directive in this regard informed there has been unscrupulous, uncontrolled and illegal extraction of sand, stones and boulders from different areas of the sub-division, thereby causing damage to the environment.
It is worth mentioning that illegal quarries in Phulbari, Chibinang and Tikrikilla, which fall under Dadenggre sub-division, are being used for extraction of minerals, which are then reportedly smuggled to the neighbouring state of Assam.
Even timbers stolen from reserve forests make their way into Assam through the plain-belt region.
