TURA, Aug 9: There is shock and disbelief among the people of Garo Hills after a body of a newborn was found abandoned on the roadside of Williamnagar town on Monday morning.
People out on their early-morning chores spotted the unclothed baby lying with its face towards the ground on the road outside the Williamnagar district jail. “Around 6 O’clock in the morning we got the information from the area. The police team visited the site and an inquest was done. Doctor’s report is awaited though some say the baby is 5-6 months old. We are registering a case and those involved in it will be booked as per law,” said East Garo Hills Superintendent of Police, Bruno A Sangma.
A post-mortem report is awaited by police to ascertain the cause of the deathPreliminary reports from hospital sources say that the child was already fully developed and may have been illegally terminated by the mother.
Though suspicion is on some unmarried woman or teen pregnancy and the use of illegal termination, strangely, the infant was found with its umbilical cord surgically cut and sealed with a clip used in a hospital.
“We are investigating if the baby was delivered here or even brought from elsewhere and abandoned, and the cause of its death,” added the SP.
