SHILLONG: The Deputy Chief Minister In-charge of Sport and Youth Affairs Bindo M Lanong on Tuesday inaugurated the programme of the Meghalaya Year of Youth 2012 at Sohra which relied on the theme, ‘Save the environment’.

Organised by the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sanghathan (NYKS) in collaboration with the Sports & Youth Affairs and office of the Sub Divisional Officer-Sohra, the programme saw the participation of hundreds of youth of Sohra area.

Speaking on the occasion, Lanong said it is high time for the youth to take up the issue of environment and start discussing on ways and means to protect, preserve and safe the environment from human interference.

“I urge the youth to respect your own work which benefits the society as a whole at the same time to give your hundred per cent in the things that you do”, he said. Lanong, who is also the Mining Minister raised the issue of mining stating that the youth should also take the lead in tackling this issue and safeguarding the environment from unsafe and unscientific mining in the state.

“The mining activities conducted in Sohra are conducted in a safe manner unlike in Jaintia Hills and Garo Hills where mining activities are done in a rampant manner”, he observed.

“It is high time that we prepare ourselves with skills in dealing with issues which concerns the environment as a whole”, Lanong said.
