State police joins hands with BSNL

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG: In a bid to make Shillong safe, the State police have tied up with the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at important locations and strategic points of the city.

Talking to The Shillong Times here on Tuesday, the State Director General of Police Kulbir Krishan said the technical department of the State police is working out the details of the project with the BSNL.

Under the system, all the feeds recorded in the CCTV cameras will be sent to Central Control Room where the footage will be kept for a year.

“This system will help in improving the law and order situation in the city,” the police chief added.

Similar initiatives have already been taken in several major cities of the country where all the important junctions and landmarks are monitored through CCTV cameras.

The state police had earlier asked the individual commercial establishments in and around Shillong to install CCTV cameras.

It is learnt that the BSNL would soon call for tenders for the project.

Reacting to a query, the police chief said the project would take off once fund is made available.

Earlier, the State government had directed all the cyber cafes of the city to install CCTV cameras in their shops.
