SHILLONG: The Shooting Association of Meghalaya (SAM), which recently became affiliated with the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), has vowed to promote the sport in Meghalaya.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, SAM president John F Kharshiing said, “It’s a traditional sport as traditionally people are fond of hunting here.”

It is learnt that the NRAI is willing to conduct training here if the association can get some talented individuals who can excel in shooting.

While admitting that the state lacks an indoor shooting range, SAM has asked the State Government to create necessary infrastructure required for the sport.

“We hope to produce some participants who can take part in the national events,” Kharshiing said.

According to SAM, the Mizoram Shooting Association has requested Meghalaya’s participation in the North East Shooting Championship, scheduled to be held in January.

“We are looking for some young talents. We have also asked the state police to provide us some of their personnel who are good in shooting to participate in the upcoming event,” said Kharshiing.

SAM will also hold coaching and safety awareness camps in the city shortly to promote the sport.
