SHILLONG: Law and order situation in West Khasi Hills, except in a few pockets, is under control, calims Director General of Police Kulbir Krishan.

The recent clash between the banned GNLA and the breakaway faction of ANVC (ANVC-B) cadres near Simsang River bordering West Khasi Hills and South Garo Hills District in which one militant was killed has propelled the state government to beef up policing in the area.

The DGP said extortion is rampant in Shahlang, a coal belt area. “We are trying to curb extortion and have strengthened police force in this area bordering South Garo Hills,” he added.

Commenting on the situation in Jaintia Hills, Krishan said there was no report of any untoward incident from the district in the last few days while adding that “Everyone is in festive mood.”

Referring to upcoming Assembly elections, the DGP said, “We have put our plans in place and it is also a known fact that many political parties are yet to announce their candidates”.

He further informed that by January next year, police department would implement its plan of actions considering the work load during elections.
