JOWAI, Aug 26: The demand for the suspension of top police officials involved in the August 12 raid that led to the killing of former HNLC member, Cheristerfield Thangkiew, continues to amplify each day, with various Jaintia Hills-based groups, under the banner of Ka Sur U Nong Jaintia, on Thursday holding a peaceful protest rally.
A day earlier, Ka Sur U Nong Mawlai had organised a similar public rally at Mawlai during which effigies of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, DGP R Chandranathan, East Jaintia Hills SP Jagpal Singh Dhanoa and SP (Traffic) Shailendra Bamaniya were set ablaze.
Thursday’s rally in Jaintia Hills, on the other hand, saw members of NGOs and youths, numbering in hundreds, holding black flags and condemning the state government and the Police department over the killing of Cheristerfield.
“They are supposed to protect the lives but they took it away  which is against the Constitution of our democratic country,” a banner read.
“We want both the SP of East Jaintia Hills, and the SP Traffic in Shillong to be suspended until the judicial inquiry is completed and if the inquiry finds them guilty, they should be terminated from their job in the state,” another banner read.
It may be mentioned that the JSU, KSU, FKJGP, HANM, ENJC, JNC, et al, were part of Thursday’s rally.
