Congress screening committee to meet today

NEW DELHI: The first ‘informal’ meeting of the screening committee of Congress will take place here on Friday.

Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma, MPCC President D D Lapang, who are the members of the committee, are already in the national capital. The General Secretary in-charge of Meghalaya Dr Dhaniram Shandil, who was made a cabinet minister in the recently-formed Himachal Predesh ministry, has also reached the national capital.

According to party sources, the Chairperson of the Committee Mrs Ambika Soni had cancelled her trip to her home state Punjab to make her available for the all important meeting.

The Secretary in-charge of Meghalaya Sanjay Bapna, who was in Jaipur, has also rushed to Delhi.

Meanwhile, several other Congress leaders from Meghalaya including working president Mrs Deborah Marak, former MPCC chief OL Nongtdu have also arrived here.

Some of the Congress leaders will also attend the party’s foundation day function here on Friday, where the party President Mrs Sonia Gandhi will hoist the party flag.

Meanwhile, former Union Minister Vincent H Pala too has cancelled his visit to Shillong. Pala, meanwhile, met Dr Shandil here on Thursday.

Prior to this meeting, Dr Shandil called on Mrs Gandhi.

Congress sources have indicated that the list is unlikely to be out before the middle of January.
