SHILLONG, Sep 5: The Federation of Khasi States (FKS) has maintained that ignoring petitions filed by traditional institutions on the suspension of the police officials involved in the killing of former HNLC leader, Cheristerfield Thangkhiew will only prolong the agitation.
Pointing out that in many states of India officials have been suspended or transferred on varied grounds, adviser and spokesperson of the FKS, John F Kharshiing said, “We would advise the MDA Government to resolve the issue at the earliest so that people’s daily activities are not disrupted.”
“We have been hit hard economically and must come up with an effective redressal mechanism so that normalcy is restored and livelihoods are activated again,” he said.
Stating that it takes a lot of effort to promote tourism, Kharshiing said, “A prerequisite for this is peace and to achieve this we need to have political sagacity at the top.”
“Being a coalition, it is also the collective responsibility of all the MDA partners to be politically sensitive, given the historical background of the Dorbar Shnong, while at the same time ensuring that the rule of law must always prevail,” he said.
He reminded that the government’s attempt to pacify the people of Mawlai by constituting a peace committee did not make much headway.
