NONGPOH, Sep 13: Extending support to the demand of ‘Ka Sur Ki Nong Mawlai’ (voice of Mawlai people), protesters in Nongpoh, under the umbrella of ‘Ka Sur na Them Ri Bhoi’ (voice of Ri Bhoi People), burned down effigies of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui and police officials near the Urban Affairs Shopping Complex here on Monday.
Former MDC of Umroi, FM Mawphniang, youth and women leaders besides people of Nongpoh area participated in the protest.
Speaking at the gathering, the leaders unanimously demanded of the state government to suspend the policemen involved in the “fake” encounter of former HNLC leader Cheristerfield Thangkhiew on August 13.
It is worth recalling that the ‘Ka Sur Ki Nong Mawlai’ has been spearheading the movement for suspension of the policemen reportedly involved in the killing of Cheristerfield.
The conglomeration in Nongpoh has called the killing of Cheristerfield a serious breach of human rights, which, according to them, clearly indicates the “incompetency” of the police department in Meghalaya.
The ‘Ka Sur na Them Ri Bhoi’ has warned that if the state government is still adamant towards the demand of the voice of Mawlai people, they are ready to intensify the agitations in the district.
The locals have also expressed anger over the statement of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, who had said that no action will be taken against the policemen until the inquiry is over.
According to them, the chief minister is protecting the police officials.
