SHILLONG, Sep 13: In the wake of the alleged smart meter scam in the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL), the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has said that it will soon decide on how to move forward with the issue among other corruption charges while, at the same time, suggesting the state government to disseminate awareness on smart meters before implementing the scheme in the state.
“Regarding these scams, we will take a call soon on how to move ahead as we have zero tolerance towards corruption,” KSU president, Lambok Marngar, said on Monday.
It may be mentioned that the USD 132.8-million ADB-funded smart meters project seems to be latest of the alleged scams in the MeECL to come to light.
The KSU chief also informed that the Union will take up the matter pertaining to smart meters with the government as it has received complaints about it.
Marngar argued that the state government firstly should create awareness and educate people about the merits and demerits of smart meters before the scheme’s state-wide implementation.
Apart from smart meters, there are also allegations of irregularities in the implementation of Saubhagya scheme for which the government has constituted an independent probe.
