Guwahati: The All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AAGSU), the apex organisation of Gorkha Students’ and youth of Assam has condemned several rape incidents across Northeastern States including Assam in recent times.
The AAGSU on Tueday extended its support to a protest march being organised by Dimapur Gorkha Union (DGU) in Dimapur in Nagaland against rape incidents in that state and the country.
The AAGSU in a statement issued here on Tuesday has called for the most sensitive and responsive mechanism to address atrocities on woman and children with deterrent laws.
AAGSU’s Karbi Anglong district unit will participate in the protest march to be held on January 11, AAGSU said in a statement here.
The AAGSU expressed its anguish and grave concern over a series of rape incidents that occurred in the region in recent times.
It mentioned about an incident on November 2, 2012 in which a mother of two was raped and butchered by one suspected illegal Bangladeshi migrant at Medzipeme, under Dimapur district.
This was followed by rape of a 4-year-old girl by one Raju Sorin 26 at Pangjong village under Senapati district, Manipur and the recent rape of a 12-year-old Gorkha girl at Borjan under Mon district of Nagaland on January 1, 2013 by one Yewang Konyak ( 30), father of a child of Wakching of the same district.
The AAGSU condemning the rape incidents stated that it would take part in the protest march organised by Dimapur Gorkha Union (DGU) in Dimapr on January 11 next.
The AAGSU’s Karbi Anglong district unit will participate in Dimapur protest rally against rape to demand justice to the victims. AAGSU’s Karbi Anglong district president Sanjib Kumar Limbu said, ‘On being communicated by AAGSU’s central committee, we will participate in the protest rally against rape to demand justice to recent rape victims of Nagaland and elsewhere.’
The Dimapur Gorkha Union (DGU) in association with All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AAGSU) will hold the protest rally at City Tower Junction, Dimapur from 10 am onward to to demand justice for rape victims and pressurise government to enact deterrent laws to root out rape incidents and advocate for sensitive and responsive mechanism to address atrocities on woman and children.
